OPINION: Sudden Valley Neighborhood Picnic Color Run Continues to Draw Attention
Last week I shared an update on a Color Run that was held at the Marina Pavilion. During the event, the GM arrived to inform the group that SVCA had revoked the rental of the pavilion due to incorrect information being provided on the rental application. At this time, a lengthy explanation of the situation has been posted to the Sudden Valley website linked from the home page: SVCA’s Public Announcement
As a participant in the event, I will say that if I were asked what occurred, my version of the events that took place would not be congruent with what is being reported to the community but more importantly, why are the actions of a group of 60 residents who did no harm worthy of being publicized to not only the association members, but to the entire world via the internet? Is this really a front page newsworthy item? How about updates on what roads are closed for maintenance and on what days and times? Or the pool schedule? Or the upcoming events? Or anything else of value that the community looks for on a daily basis and can’t find on the website?

Recreational Fires are Currently Banned
SVCA’s Rules & Regulations state that a burn ban automatically goes into effect in Sudden Valley if Whatcom County declares a burn ban. On June 9th, the South Whatcom Fire Authority implemented a Stage One burn ban, triggering this requirement.
The Rules & Regulations explain that when a burn ban is in effect, no outdoor fires except properly enclosed cooking fires using gas or charcoal as fuel will be permitted. All other outdoor fires (open flame, including recreational fires) are prohibited for the duration of the burn ban.
Sudden Valley’s rules are more restrictive than those of the County. Even though recreational fires are still allowed by the county, SVCA rules are clear that no recreational fires with open flames will be allowed. Violation of the burn ban can result in a fine of $250. The fine increases to $500 if there is a subsequent violation.
See HERE for Sudden Valley Burn Ban restrictions.
